The idea for Asynchealth was born in 2008 when a patient’s husband took a video of his depressed wife describing how she was feeling and texted it to Peter Yellowlees, their psychiatrist.
The retired couple were on a six-month sojourn in another state, so Peter Yellowlees used the video to assess her mental state and successfully adjusted her medications to reduce her depression sending her a new prescription via her electronic medical record.
The patient fully recovered and the couple was delighted with the outcome. The feasibility of using recorded video to assess patients was demonstrated. This led to 12 years of clinical trial research by Peter Yellowlees and his team to demonstrate the feasibility, effectiveness, and patient satisfaction with asynchronous video care. This involved about $7m in grants and led to 19 peer-reviewed publications.
In 2022 the Asynchealth co-founders, all with a decade or more of collaboration on these studies, decided to commercialize the process. Hence the company.
